General 1 Tab (Pro, Std, Lite)
This is where you can change general and miscellaneous options that affect HTML Validator's integrated editor.
StartUp and ShutDown Options
- Automatically open documents that were open at the last shutdown - Check this box to save a list of open documents when you close HTML Validator. The next time you run HTML Validator, HTML Validator accesses this list and automatically reloads the documents in the list so that you can start working where you left off. This option is enabled by default.
- Automatically load scratch pads at startup and save them at shutdown - Check this box to automatically load the scratch pads at startup and save them at shutdown. By default, the scratch pads are stored in files named "scratchpad1.txt" and "scratchpad2.txt" and placed in the HTML Validator installation directory. If this box is not checked, the scratch pads will not be loaded from disk and will be blank at startup. You can still use them if this option is not checked, but anything left in the scratch pads will not be saved at shutdown unless this option is checked. There will be no warning that you are losing data by not saving the scratch pads at shutdown. This option is enabled by default.
- Periodically ask to check for a new version of HTML Validator at startup - Check this box to automatically be asked to check for a new version of HTML Validator approximately every few weeks. This option is enabled by default. (New v4.05)
- If an instance of CSE is already running at startup then ask to run a separate instance - Check this box to display a message asking to run another instance of CSE if an instance of CSE's editor is already running when another instance is started. Running multiple instances is not recommended due to potential conflicts among running instances. This option is enabled by default. (New v5.51)
Miscellaneous Options
- Automatically save document (don't ask to save) before viewing with an external viewer -
Before viewing the document that you are working on with an external viewer, it must be saved to disk so that the external viewer can access it. If you try to view a document with an external viewer that has not been saved, HTML Validator will ask you to save it first. You must save it if you want to view your document with an external viewer. By checking this option, HTML Validator will not ask you to save your document if it has changed, instead HTML Validator will automatically save your document and then show it to you in the external viewer. This option is not enabled by default.
- Automatically validate documents when opened - Check this box to automatically validate documents when they are first opened in the editor. HTML Validator will only try to validate the document types that it knows how to validate by using the document's file extension to determine what type of document it is. This option is not enabled by default. (New v4.05)
- Automatically revalidate documents when reloaded - Check this box to automatically revalidate documents when they are reloaded. Only documents that were previously validated before they are reloaded are revalidated. This option is enabled by default. (New v5.51)
- Use Office XP style menus and toolbars - Check this box to use Office XP style menus and toolbars. This option is enabled by default. (New v5.51)
General 2 Tab (Pro, Std, Lite)
Link Checking Options
- Send usernames and passwords when only domains match - Check this box to send usernames and passwords when checking links for documents that have been opened from the web using a username and password and when the link being checked is to the same domain as the source document, regardless of the directory. If this box is not checked, usernames and passwords will be sent only when both the domain and directory of the link being checked matches that of the source document. Checking this box may send usernames and passwords to more locations and may be less secure. This option also affects URL targets with usernames and passwords in the Batch Wizard. This option is not enabled by default. (New v4.05)
- Automatically check links in the background - Check this box to constantly check unchecked links in the background while you work. The link checker will automatically go into action when you are working with a document that has had links extracted that have not yet been checked. If HTML Validator finds bad links in the document that you are working with, a red square will appear before the Links tab to indicate that bad links have been found. If all links have been found to be good, a green square will appear. This option is enabled by default. (New v4.50)
Integrated Web Browser Options
- When in preview mode, automatically refresh the web browser - Check this box so that the web browser is automatically refreshed every few seconds when in preview mode. This allows you to see how your document looks as you work on it and change it. This option is enabled by default in v4.5100- and disabled by default in v4.5110+. (New v4.50)
- When in preview mode, refresh browser when document is saved - Check this box to refresh the integrated web browser when it is in preview mode and the document that is being previewed is saved. This option is enabled by default. (New v4.50)
- When not in preview mode, automatically validate the web browser source - Check this box so that HTML Validator automatically validates the URLs that you visit as you visit them when the web browser is not in preview mode. This option is enabled by default. (New v4.50)
- Extensions to preview - Specify the file extensions of the files that can be previewed in the integrated web browser when the browser is in preview mode. This prevents certain files from being previewed, such as css files. Previewing css files by themselves is not useful and may cause problems. (New v4.51)
- For more information, including information about preview mode, please see the help page for the Integrated Web Browser.
